The building’s concept is based on a story that began in Russia, but ends here in Riga. The story is of the fragile feelings of Anna Kern, lover of Alexander Puskin and wife of the Riga Garrison Commandant Division General Yermolay Kern. Despite the brevity of their relationship, it has left and indelible impression on world cultural heritage, which we all know courtesy of one of the most beautiful poets in the history of literature: “I keep in mind that magic moment”.
References to this story are discernible in the elegant interior of the building’s public premises. In the murals, one can observe both lovers and enjoy the evanescent lines of poetry while taking a breather from the hectic pace of daily life.
Contemporary materials are used in the finish. The floor is covered by stone tiles, which are a durable finishing element and a rug to silence the steps of residents. The walls are adorned by wood panels, combined with a decorative finish created by the artist. All elements have been prepared in accordance with an individual design.
The interior is enhanced by elegant contemporary furniture and lighting fixtures made by European manufacturers. The central accent in the entrance hall is a plastic bench made by the Spanish manufacturer Vondom. To quote the furniture designer Fabio Novembre: “AND is a spatial concept, a volume that cuts through the air, creating emotional turbulence for those who get swept up in it. AND is the result of two people looking at each other out of the corner of their eye, a multiplication into the infinite that includes anyone who simply wants to be there. AND is the reflection of the DNA of a generation that has embraced co-existence while denying tyranny.
AND: it’s time for conjunction.”
This elegant and functional interior is invigorating and reminds one of history. After Anna’s return to Riga, she continued to write letters to Alexander for years, without realising that they were destined never to meet again. However, one can clearly sense the feelings that once vibrated through the air here!
